First Friday Reception: Friday, September 3rd, 7-10pm
Closing Tea & Artist Talk: Sunday, September 19th, 3-6pm (Talk begins at 4pm)

This exhibit explores the idea of home through the notions of mobility and adaptive ways of living. As in the past, modern day homesteaders are in search of new strategies to lay down roots and create environments conducive to life and growth. The two artists chosen for the exhibit approach ideas of travel and home from futurist, fanciful, nostalgic and pre-apocalyptic viewpoints. In search of the idyllic lifestyle, Gina Tuzzi creates fantastic caravans of modern gypsy travel mobiles with ether reaching, stacked living quarters. By re-appropriating symbols she have collected throughout the years of her California seaside existence, she aims to celebrate the presence of the spiritual and electric, as it exists within this idyll and its many modern day tribes.

Tuzzi’s recent works on paper and 3D models have become a surrogate convoy of paradisiacal blueprints through which she investigates the cosmic architecture of a dreamscape that is rooted very solidly in her own desires.

Tyler Bewley spent much of his youth exploring the expansive areas of rural California. Now residing in San Francisco, he has become acutely aware of the tension that exists between nature, man and development in CA. His work is inspired by the state of the natural environment, urban american life, and the human proclivity to develop and dominate our surroundings.

Through his mixed media works on paper and canvas, Beweley conveys a message of urgency about the state of man and nature using his work as a lens to provide the viewer with ways in which to reflect and examine these underlying issues.

Gina Tuzzi lives and works in Oakland, CA, she recently graduated with an MFA from Mills College and was a nominee for the 2010 SECA award.

Tyler Beweley received a degree from Skidmore College, his work has been exhibited widely and can be found on international magazine covers and local wine bottles. He is currently teaching art at Marin Academy High School.

Three local artists will display their works on the expansive walls of the community center body shop at 401–26th Street between Telegraph and Broadway — the vision of Oakland’s own neighborhood dynamo, Giovanna Tanzillo. The broad brick surfaces inside Uptown make it an ideal place to display and view the colorful visions of muralists Ed Cassel, Dan Fontes and Eric J. Kos, their selections of some of the finest works of pinball designers revisioned as paintings that embody the artistry that went into the original design. Says Cassel, “These hand-painted labors of love serve as a tribute to the original artists who created the classic designs. Our over-sized interpretations are picture windows into those magical worlds reflected in the games. We invite you to step into the looking glass.”

Cassel, Fontes and Kos present their works in association with the Pacific Pinball Museum of Alameda, CA, which will install a limited number of games set to free play for the opening and reception scheduled for July 16. Some of the eleven murals, representing hundreds of hours of work will be for sale with a portion of proceeds to benefit the non-profit museum dedicated to the preservation of pinball. The new show brings to light the art of pinball game art designers Gordon Morison, Art Stenholm,Dave Christensen, Christian Marche and others working mostly during the 1960s and 70s. The show will remain on display until the end of August.

About Uptown Body & Fender: Giovanna Tanzillo’s passion for art shows from the design of the Uptown Body and Fender building, to the many talented folks she invites to display their works within her walls. Far more than insurance adjusters, her staff practices the artistry of bringing damaged cars back to their original engineered beauty. In the meantime, her impeccable shop at times transforms into an elegant fundraiser, a formal tea, a puppet theater, or an art gallery. Situated right on the path of the Art Murmur phenomenon, Tanzillo is thrilled to contribute her energies to Oakland’s Renaissance, earning her this year’s “Neighborhood Dynamo” award from the Oakland Chamber of Commerce.

About Ed Cassel: Ed Cassel’s colorful and extensive history of making large-scale images includes painting billboards for Tower Records, rendering sets for feature films under the auspices of the Scenic Artists Union and completing a number of public arts commissions in the Bay Area. He is a regular contributor to Woodminster Theater productions in Oakland, CA. Cassel resides in Alameda. His long time association with Pacific Pinball Museum curator Michael Schiess, led to a deep appreciation for pinball art expressed in this show.

About Dan Fontes: A truly professional muralist Dan Fontes’ work graces walls all over the Bay Area, from the famed Oakland Giraffes to the Playland-not-at-the-Beach mural, Fontes body of work is prodigious. Promotor, historian, pinball museum board member and San Rafael resident, Fontes takes his pinball very seriously. A true visionary who sees a mural on every blank wall, Fontes is proud to show you works from pinball history that are vastly underappreciated. Find out more about Dan at www.danfontes.com.

About Eric J. Kos: Oddly enough the co-owner and founder of the Alameda Sun newspaper in Alameda found the time to squeeze in one mural for this show. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design’s illustration department, Kos dusted off his paintbrushes to get back to one of his many passions. Some may remember Kos’ contributions to local history with his writing partner Dennis Evanosky. Kos penned East Bay Then & Now among other titles. With great respect for original artist Gordon Morison, Kos gladly presents El Dorado.

About the Pacific Pinball Museum:

The Pacific Pinball Museum opened it’s doors on Webster St. in November, 2009 after continually expanding for 8 years from it’s humble beginnings as a pinball speakeasy with a back door entrance behind Webster. It has quickly risen to become the world’s leading pinball museum. Since it’s inception, the foundation of the museum has been the Art of Pinball. The PPM, as a non-profit has encouraged, sponsored and provided studio space for the artists to work on this incredible collection of Pinball Murals by Mssrs. Cassel, Fontes and Kos. We are proud to be part of this incredible event. Our continuing mission is * *”To inspire an interest in science, art and history through pinball and to preserve and promote this important part of American culture.”

The Museum is located at 1510 Webster St. in Alameda, CA.
Our website is www.pacificpinball.org <http://www.pacificpinball.org/> We are open to the public 6 days a week, closed Mondays.
