a solo exhibition of new work by Steuart Pittman

February 5th – March 14th, 2010
First Friday Reception: March 5, 7-10pm
Sunday Tea: March 14th 3-6pm

Pittman’s interest in art history strongly influences his practice, and he is particularly focused in the study of geometric abstract paintings. Using geometry “to orchestrate a gratifying visual exchange”, his finished paintings consist of carefully arranged units of color that provoke and articulate his own sensibilities. These works create a resonance that feels at once balanced and precarious.

Steuart received an M.F.A. from Mills College in Oakland, California. He was a recipient of the Jay DeFeo M.F.A. Award in 2009. Steuart lives and works in Oakland, CA.

Krowswork presents Mirror Made Me

Krowswork

January 30, 2010
6:00 pmto9:00 pm

Shana Moulton Sand Saga

“From mirror after mirror,
No vanity’s displayed:
I’m looking for the face I had
Before the world was made.”
- William Butler Yeats

Krowswork Gallery & Project Space is pleased to present Mirror Made Me, an exhibition of recent photography, video, and installation opening Saturday, January 30th and running through March 7th. The exhibition features work by Aly Su Borst, Ursula Brookbank, Michael Deane, Cybele Lyle, Shana Moulton, and Andrew Wilson.

Join us for the opening on January 30th from 6 to 9 and on the February 5th Art Murmur from 5-9.

Each of the artists in Mirror Made Me takes an oblique, and constructed, approach to “self”-portraiture and performance using the mirror/camera as either a literal object within the work or as a metaphor for self-expression in order to explore and gauge video and photography’s potential for actual self-discovery.

From Medusa done in by her reflection in Perseus’s shield to the stepmother’s magical mirror in Snow White to Lacan’s influential identification of a “mirror stage” in child development, the mirror and our reflections in it have been relevant and rich psychic touchstones for thousands of years.

But the mirror and/or the idea of self-reflection in the context of photography and video becomes something else altogether. For the camera is already a mirror in itself. Mirrors within the context of these mediums are much like plays within plays. The complex effects are revealing, but never as straightforwardly as mere reflection.

At times, an unexpected light shines on outer terrain and reveals to us a reflection of the inner world. Employing an unusual combination of emotionally lush imagery with a graphic and often austere compositional sense, photographic artists Noele Lusano and James Minton bring us snapshots of these illuminated moments.

In addition The World Turned inside out will be on view Saturdays from 2pm-5pm at Oakopolis during the month of February. As well as the first two Saturdays in March from 2pm-5pm.
